Storyline : A non-conformist cinematic protest that paints a vivid picture of India’s emotional freedom struggle, many years after she gained her political independence. Set between 1991 and 2001, the film uses both documentary and narrative fiction to weave together two story-lines. One, of a young Indian cricket team under the harsh relentless glare of the national spotlight. The other, a story of a defiant young girl, Tara (Plabita Borthakur), caught in the cross-hairs of a patriarchal echo chamber, the face of which is her father (Ankur Vikal). Even from the age of ten, a young Tara (Twisha Joshi) finds a kindred spirit in a rebel Indian cricketer, Sourav Ganguly who is questioning the conventions of his sport as she questions the traditions of society. Connected by an invisible thread, the two stories come to a head when the Indian cricket team comes back from the dead to defeat England in the 2002 NatWest Series Final at the imperial altar of the game – the Lord’s cricket ground. In a show of maverick defiance, Indian captain Sourav Ganguly pulls off his shirt and waves it, bare-chested from the hallowed balcony at the stadium, to celebrate India’s victory. A celebratory act that crash-lands into pop culture and becomes a tipping point for a suppressed generation to fling away its inferiority complex and rise from the shadows of its colonial past. This single act of euphoric insubordination also gives Tara, watching the match at home, the steely courage to stand proud and comfortable in her own identity, against centuries of prejudice.—Team Everymedia Technologies
